Character Name: Tidus
Canon: Final Fantasy X
Canon Point: Post-X/Pre-X-2

Personality:
Tidus originally comes off as a bratty show off with an inferiority complex. This is heavily due to his upbringing as an only child who was often neglected by his parents. Jecht was commonly caught up in blitzball and the affections of his wife while said wife was caught up in her infatuation with Jecht. He was often ignored and when he would make a big spat about it towards them? He was shrugged off and called a cry baby. This undoubtedly borne out of it Tidus' habit of wanting to garner attention. He enjoys having the spotlight cast on him and isn't really afraid to do what he wants. Screw the rules! He's got his own way of thinking and doing and no one else is going to put a damper on things. This makes him appear cocky and confident- but also very immature. Which he really is. He's not heartless, but he definitely isn't one to think of other people's perspectives so much- at least not in the beginning.

That's something that's shown through some of his experiences with Spira. Tidus doesn't like to conform to their ways. He doesn't worry about traditions and rituals and everything in between. All he focuses on, at first, is his need to get back, to go home. But the more he's exposed to matters, of course, the more he has to deal with what he has to deal with. But that doesn't mean he has to necessarily agree with or like what's going on. If anything, he questions things. He's just not one of those people that will duck his head and just go with how it should be. And that's a habit of he continues to carry with him to this day. Tidus just isn't one to conform. He needs good reason. Of course, you know, it doesn't help when there's also some weird things going on like how the Hymn of the Fayth is something his dad always used to hum and how the gesture they use is the blitzball sign for victory. What is this weirdness? He can't seriously take on this religion that's using things that were far from in his life. Something's fishy here.

Coupled with that lack of conformity, of course, is the way he seems to like to passionately parade his opinions where they count- and even when they don't count. He isn’t one to back down easily, although he can have enough sense sometimes to be careful with his words (like, for instance, his dislike for Seymour, something he bites his tongue on at first or how, while he knows Rikku is an Al Bhed, he doesn't let Wakka know because of Wakka's grudge). But especially if it's something he's heavily against? Like the truth about the pilgrimage. Despite knowing what could come of Spira, he tries so hard to encourage Yuna to quit her pilgrimage, to just live a normal life, because he knows that even if she's accepted that fate, he can't accept things as they are. He won't let her accept sacrifice, even if it may be for the greater good.

He is often taken as naïve due to this, especially so for the way he doesn't want to accept the pilgrimage as it stands, but it’s the way he approaches it that makes all the difference, too. Because therein lies another key factor to Tidus. And that is his optimism. It's a healthy sort of trait, no doubt held from his confidence back home, that helps to counter-balance all the gloom that surrounds him. Most of the time, he comes off as cheerful with that goofy smile and excited eyes. He laughs and jokes despite all the hardships. It's his way of being as well as his way of coping as best as he can with matters. And while these traits are dampened when he finds out the truth behind things, they are still a core part of him.

Behind this cheeky attitude though, Tidus gets his moments of anxiety. Times where he wants to just scream (and, uh... goes for it when he does). He's actually not all about pushing his anxious feelings on other people if he can help it, but if someone confronts him about it, he's not going to push them away either. One such case is when he's feeling all upset and uneasy and Yuna gives him a little push not only once but twice at least. One moment, she encourages him to just scream. The other he 'practices laughing'. Just with growing up as he has, he's a little more on the independent side. Of course, anger is a whole different story.

When Tidus doesn't like something or becomes angry and/or upset enough with something, he's not afraid to say something about it. If anything, he'll take the metaphorical bull by the horns and have at. He's not someone that will just idle and be walked all over. He's definitely not doormat material if his outbursts towards Seymour and his father are any indication. Nor, again, is he one to conform to things. Probably the best example would be when he first learns the truth about the pilgrimage at Home and has an outburst over it. He just can't believe that the people who Yuna grew up with, who love her like family, would allow such a thing.

Perhaps what is most surprising about Tidus, however, is the way he seems to think outside the box with a strange sort of open-ended logic at times. Perhaps this is simply because he comes from Zanarkand from a thousand years ago, so he's not exactly stuck in their ways of thinking, too. But it is ultimately him who realizes that maybe if they get all the people to settle his father by singing the Hymn of the Fayth, that they'll be able to get inside of Sin and take it out that way once and for all.

Overall, Tidus is a pretty complicated guy with some handful of issues to deal with, but he really tries hard to deal the best he can and enjoy life as it comes to him. While he's self-centered at first, he comes to cherish the friends he makes to the point that he would gladly lay down his life for them. And he essentially does in a way when he goes through with defeating Sin while knowing full well that he will fade afterward when the fayth fall back into slumber. Perhaps that makes him almost hypocritical after fighting against Yuna's perseverance to do what she feels she must, but that none-the-less speaks tomes of how greatly he values them.

History:
Listen to my story. This… may be our last chance.

Tidus wasn’t exactly the hero type back on Zanarkand. He lived under the shadow of his father, Jecht, who had disappeared a little over a decade ago and had been a famous blitz ball player prior to that disappearance. Tidus himself lived for two things, really: himself and the game. This would all change though when his city was taken out by Sin, a giant whale-like beast. Despite trying to fight it off with Auron, a friend of his father’s, Sin consumed them instead. When Tidus awoke, he found himself on Spira alone at a temple of sorts.

He was later found by the Al Bhed, a scavenger race well known for their machina (or machines), who took him aboard their vessel. He befriended one of them, Rikku, who was taken aback when he claimed to have come from Zanarkand. Because the Zanarkand that Rikku knew of had been destroyed a thousand years ago. It was a holy place now, nothing to joke about. It would offend the people of Spira for him to say such things. She offered out the idea that maybe it was the toxin from Sin that had affected him, hindering his memory as it was, but Tidus didn't buy it. Still, Rikku insisted that he was best to be careful and Tidus slowly began to understand that maybe for right then? It was best to use that as a cover for his memories (even if they were real to him). And that was the least of Tidus’ worries. Soon after, Sin attacked them and Tidus was stranded out to sea.

He later ended up on Besaid Island where a quick show of his blitz ball abilities landed him on the good side of one of the island residents, Wakka. Tidus quickly found himself ambushed with a very new and very different culture surrounding the teachings of Yevon, especially so when he ignored taboos and followed a very worried Wakka into the midst of the temple on the island. There, he met the new summoner, Yuna, and her guardians, Lulu and Kimahri. Wakka himself was one of her guardians and had been concerned with Yuna’s safety since she had not left the temple for over a day. Yuna was the daughter of High Summoner Braska, the man who, with the help of Tidus' father, Jecht, and his friend, Auron, was responsible for Spira’s last “Calm”, or grace period where Sin ceases to exist if for only a little while. She planned to follow in his footsteps.

It was shortly afterward that Tidus was pulled into the scheme of things, following the pilgrimage to collect all the aeons from the temples and put Sin to rest. Tidus, himself, didn’t really care at first, using this opportunity as a means to try and return home. At least that was what his original plan was. As the journey moved forward though, Tidus quickly discovered that it wasn’t a happy one. Sin showcased its destruction continuously, taking out both Kilika and later Operation Mi’ihen despite their efforts. He could only watch painfully as Yuna performed one sending after another, a means of sending restless spirits to the Farplane or else they would dissolve into fiends.

Politics also seemed to follow the group. One of the Maesters, Seymour, decided he would wed Yuna supposedly to try and make life easier for the people of Spira. They would have something to be happy about. It was later discovered that Seymour had killed his father to gain his title among other things. The party killed him but they never have a chance to send him. He would be a troublesome foe for the rest of their journey, forcing Yuna to marry him and eventually acting as a catalyst to break their faith in Yevon’s teachings.

The journey only continued to become more troubling. Summoners were suddenly vanishing. When Sin attacked and sent them stranded in the desert, Rikku, who had joined them a while back, led them to the Al Bhed's home known as, well - Home. It was there as it was being attacked and driven asunder that Tidus found out the truth. The Al Bhed had been kidnapping the summoners to stop their pilgrimages. The reason? It was a sacrifice. They would ultimately die to appease Sin. That was the price a summoner paid for the people. Frustrated by this revelation, Tidus and Rikku spent the rest of the journey to Zanarkand, the last temple, trying to find a way to save her from that fate. It was ironic though. Because around the same time, Tidus had found out that he was nothing more than a figment of his Zanarkand, a dream kept alive by the very fayth that they depended on for the aeons. And if Sin were defeated, he would disappear.

Of course, it didn’t seem like that would happen permanently anyway. The others didn’t believe there was another way. Or perhaps they were just hesitant to find that means. When they finally arrived at Zanarkand though, they would change their minds. There, it was revealed to them that Sin would always be reborn as they knew. But the sacrifice of the summoner gave birth to the final aeon who turned out to be one of the summoner’s guardians. In time, that guardian would become possessed and become Sin and the cycle would continue. Tidus and the others stood opposed to this idea and took it upon themselves to find another way.

They eventually decided that they would take Sin down from the inside of its very body. It was there that Tidus was reunited with his father. Auron had told him that Sin was Jecht before… but Tidus hadn’t believed it until Yuna had noted to him that his father had appeared a decade before, which was shortly around the time Jecht had disappeared from Tidus’ Zanarkand. With the final puzzle piece clicking in at Spira’s Zanarkand, there was no more doubt that his father had become the final aeon last time.

They were forced to fight and defeat him before they finally faced off with the true culprit behind everything, Yu Yevon, the original leader of Zanarkand long ago. It had been due to Yu Yevon’s wish to save Zanarkand from a war between it and Bevelle that Sin had been born in the first place. Yet, ironically, the city was destroyed and Sin was left as a mindless drone out to destroy any place that became too overpopulated and technologically advanced. Yu Yevon continued to possess aeons in order for him to do so. The party defeated Yu Yevon and put an end to what Auron called the “endless spiral of death”.

Of course, with Sin defeated, Tidus was forced to depart. So, with a sad bid farewell to his confused companions and a painful departure with a particularly miserable summoner, he found himself jumping off their airship into what he assumed to be the Farplane below.

LITTLE DID HE KNOW HE WOULD JUMP INTO ANOTHER MINDFUCK OH-HO~

Abilities:

Magic

Haste/Hastaga
A spell that speeds up whoever has it cast on, increasing their reaction time and overall agility. Haste can only be used on single targets while Hastaga can be cast on multiple.

Slow/Slowaga
A spell that does exactly what it says. Whoever has this cast on them will have their agility dramatically dropped. Hastaga is a step up in that it can be cast on multiple targets.

Quick Hit
Basically what it says. Tidus uses his beast agility to take a fast whack at his target- fast enough that he can usually smack them again before they hit him. That's the idea anyway. Oh JRPGs~

Cheer
Another silly move which- wouldn't really be considered an actual combat move per-say in a journaland game, itself. However, Tidus does have some ridiculous optimism and that can help keep morale up!

Swordsmanship
Tidus has some mad skills when it comes to handling a sword. He was surprisingly quick to pick up on things and with experience from the pilgrimage, he's grown to be someone not to trifle with. He fights in a swift, one-handed combat that presses for an agile offensive, skill that clearly reflects from his days as an athlete back home.

Limits
As is typical of most Final Fantasy titles, Tidus knows a few specific moves known as limits: higher skilled attacks that can pack quite a punch.

Spiral Cut
A fancy schmancy catapulting of himself at the enemy resulting in some powerful aerial downswing that does some considerable damage.

Slice and Dice
A series of charging the enemy multiple times (usually up to six), making a quick, sharp slice as he passes by with each attempt.

Energy Rain
A ridiculous attack where he does exactly what it says: firing several spheres of energy down towards his target from above. They absorb into the ground below them- and then explode only seconds afterward. Don't ask how he learned how to do this considering his track record with magic is pretty weak. I don't know either.

Blitz Ace
Tidus goes all out with a series of hard strikes (approximately seven in total) before hopping up with the air. Then, with the assistance of an ally throwing a blitzball, he nails said blitzball, uh. Devastating the target.

Visuals for the limits can be found here.

Ghostness
Not so much of an ability- as in not one at all. It's more of a quirk. Being essentially a dream? Tidus will have moments where his body will destabilize. This is from being away from home and also due to the fayth sleeping at said home. They were the ones keeping him from fading off, after all. During these moments, while anything he's wearing or often carries on hand will go translucent with him, he'll be out of touch with anything else- quite literally. This will only last for a brief moment though. A few seconds or so and then his body will stabilize once more.

ALSO BEING ANNOYING.
AND WHINY.

Strengths:

+ Tidus was basically born and raised to play ball- blitzball, that is. Therefore, he's physically fit, holding up well on the stamina spectrum of things with a side of great agility. He's a tough guy despite his durp.

+ His charisma is a surprisingly strong trait. He is really able to talk the talk at times. Perhaps because for the most part? His words tend to be what he honestly thinks. So, perhaps that's truly what makes them carry such power.

+ Tidus is a friendly, helpful guy. While that doesn't necessarily guarantee that he'll be the best of pals with everyone he meets, that does to attract positive reception.

+ He can be pretty gutsy and doesn't mind hitting the ground running or playing things by ear if he has to. He's got some courage and guts to him.

Weaknesses:

- Sometimes Tidus can tend to get in over his head with matters. This mainly stems from him letting his anger get the best of him and has him running into the heart of things before he even really gives it good thought. At least if they get him riled enough.

- Branching off his recklessness is his stubbornness to follow through with what he believes. He's not someone to conform which good chances will cause him all sorts of problems between whoever he's staying with.

- Tidus' cockiness can also get him into a heap of trouble. Just like his anger, this can cause him to sometimes push his luck and, well. That can lead to bad results.

- Anything to do with his dad. While he's kinda made peace with him, it's still a touchy subject and he'll likely say negative things about him before he says anything positive.

- His friends, but that's kind of a given.

[ When the video first goes up, all that can be seen is a blur of motion. Then ceiling. Then motion again. Then more ceiling. Motion. Ceiling. You get the picture. ]

So, I'm supposed to use this phone to keep in touch with everyone else who they think is nuts. Something about some kind of personality disorder they think I have. And I guess everyone else that's part of this program.

[ There's a drawn out pause, coupled with more phone flipping before it stops. And this time? It's held up so that whoever's watching can finally see his face- one of a young man with short, wild blond hair and scowling blue eyes. ]

Uh huh. Right. If you ask me, I think the crazy ones are these docs. I don't believe any of this.

[ Perhaps in a way, it doesn't matter. He's supposed to have just vanished off to the Far Plane or Dream Zanarkand or whatever now, right? A part of him is prodding at him, reminding him that he could very well be in some kind of afterlife. That, hey, this is like the second chance he never thought he would have.

But there's that larger part of him right then that's just so stubborn. And for the moment, that's all that's set in his furrowed brow and frowning lips.

Third Person Sample:

He shouldn't be here.

It was a thought that had been running a million miles over in his head ever since he plopped down and tried to concentrate on the paperwork in front of him of a job that he supposedly had dreamed to have all his life.

An office job?

Seriously?

It was far from anything he'd ever dream of. An office job meant exactly what he had in front of him. Writing formalities with fake context and sucking up to people just as fake about things he really didn't care about. And in the grand scheme of things? Just hoping to impress them with pretty words so that they bought into the little charade and did what he asked.

He just didn't have in him though. This was nothing like him. Nothing like him at all. For one, he didn't like lying. For another, what was so amazing about Bubbly Scrubs House Cleaner that he had to get this dumb product out there? ...Okay, and maybe lastly? He had no idea what to even write! Tidus sighed, slumping further into his seat.

"Ughhh... I just wanna go home." He muttered it to himself quietly in the dead quiet space before he leaned back. At least the plush office chairs were a plus. Closing his eyes, he reached up and rubbed his face with his hands. Then ran them both through his hair and sucked in a breath, exhaling slowly. He cracked an eye, gazing lazily at the corner of the desktop. And then he wished he hadn't.

"It's 12:30 already?" He felt that seething feeling from before. One that had come and gone and come and gone again throughout the evening. Each time, he had tried to stay it. But this time, he had finally had it. A loud slam resounded as he hit the desk with a fist. He left it there for a moment, breath finding audibility.

"Brian?" A soft voice echoed in the office. One that if it weren't for the name she called him, he would have thought... but he knew better. Relenting, he pushed out from his cubicle, the chair easily slipping back into the main little hall. And almost running over the young lady who'd called him in the process. He shouted something unintelligible, jerking and swerving the chair out of the way as she stepped back. And then he was hitting the wall of the other side. Not enough to do any harm, but it was definitely enough to jar him.

"Hey, Caitie." His response was delayed with a forced smile. She didn't look awfully impressed. He wouldn't have been impressed either.

"Are you still working on that proposal?" But he could always be somewhat impressed by her guesses. Or maybe that was just her knowing Brian that well. He glimpsed at his space.

"I..." Tidus scratched his head. "Yeah." Caitie rolled her eyes.

"You gotta finish that tomorrow. You know what will happen if you don't. Pete's got it in for you."

"Oh, him." Tidus knew the moment those words left his mouth as dry as they were... that they really shouldn't have.

"Brian, this is serious! You just got that promotion and you're already dwaddling away with things! You keep it up and he'll take it right out from under your nose! You gotta keep on top of things!"

"Yeah, well, maybe it would help if I wasn't campaigning how great it is to clean houses."

Caitie could only stare at first. But then staring soon turned into exasperation, her arms gesturing widely. "Are you listening to yourself? I thought you were the one that said so yourself that it's a step. That if you keep up with it, you'll make it big! And then you'll be out making your own ads for things you really want to write about!"

That did it. Tidus was up on his feet before he knew it. "Yeah, well- Maybe I don't want to do something like this anymore! Maybe I want a change!" Leaving the chair as it was, he slipped back into the office. Caitie followed, standing at the edge of it now.

"Like what? Brian-"

"Maybe I want to be an athlete! Or I dunno! A coach or- something! Maybe I don't want to be a part of this anymore!" He saved the document on the computer and then set to collecting his jacket.

"Brian... What are you saying?" Tidus didn't say anything at first, brushing past her. But just as it seemed like he was dead set on hammering down that hallway, he caught the way she was looking at him and just sighed.

"I'm saying I'm out." And as she watched his back, as he started down the hallway, there might have been a 'Sorry' murmured under his breath.
